SIJHSAA holds second golf finals

Adan Mizell, Alex Hall, Eli Brown, Wilke Armstrong and Jordan Forthman (from left) represented Massac Junior High School on Tuesday, May 10, in the SIJHSAA golf finals held at Rend Lake Golf Course. Of the five, Armstrong placed seventh. The top 15 were awarded medals.

Just a few days removed from some chilly, wet weather, the second annual SIJHSAA golf finals were held Tuesday, May 10, at Rend Lake Golf Club in Whittington.

The top 10 male and female finishers, along with ties, from three regionals teed it up just after 8 a.m. and things wrapped up nearly nine hours later.

In their inaugural tournament last year, the boys had to qualify, but a lack of sufficient numbers on the girls’ side led to an “open” tournament for the girls.

Things were different this time as the Tuesday participants had already been through the fire once.

The Massac County contingent consisted of Massac Junior High School students Eli Brown, Alex Hall and Adan Mizell for the boys and Wilke Armstrong and Jordan Forthman for the girls.

Hot, humid conditions weighed on players and spectators alike as the day wore on, but everyone persevered. When the tabulations were done, Armstrong was the only one of the Trojans who received a medal. She finished seventh with the top 15 finishers receiving medals.

A tip of the hat to everyone who put in a long, hot day and survived.
