The Massac County boys' soccer team saved what may have been their best game of the year for the opening round of the IHSA Class A regional.
The play-in game was held at Metropolis while the rest of the games will be at the Anna High School soccer complex.
A 1-1 tie didn't last long as Massac controlled the game holding Harrisburg scoreless for over 60 minutes. Massac showed some seemingly newfound offensive skills as they rolled to the 6-1 win.
Goalie Drew Castleman recorded three saves and the offense did the rest. Eli Quint assisted Eli Henry on a goal and Henry booted one for a total of two goals giving him nine for the year.
Sam Crockett scored twice giving him three goals for the year. Noah Elliott scored for the sixth time this year, and Jake Miller made his first goal of the year a memorable one on an improbable play in front of the Bulldog goal.
The win was tempered by the reality of playing a powerful Columbia team next and that cloud that loomed over their heads opened up and poured on the Patriots Tuesday afternoon at Anna as the Eagles pounded the Pats 10-0.
Coach Kyle Reinwald has a talented group of youngsters coming back for next year and will no doubt push hard for further improvement in the MCHS soccer program. I bet he gets it.
