Massac County's girls' golf team blew away the competition at Franklin County Country Club last Thursday with a team score of 319, which was 60 strokes better than runner-up Zeigler-Royalton.

Going back to 2003, the girls have failed to win their regional only once. That's a pretty good run.

Lily Conkle was the overall medalist with a one under par 70. Madie Coakley came in at 79, Alexis Frazine shot 84, McKinnley Korte shot 86, Delaney Williams shot a 97 and Izzy Hawes just missed breaking the century mark with a 101.

The win was a terribly bittersweet one for Massac as they were without head coach Laurie Glass. Glass's father, Jim Lester, passed away last Wednesday. A personal aside to the Lester family: I really didn't know Jim very well, but I can say unequivocally that he was truly an inspiration to me. I don't know how many times I met Jim and wife Judy on the bike trail over the past several years. Didn't matter how hot, or how cold it was, it seemed like I met them every time I rode. His battle with Parkinson's was no doubt strengthened by his dedication to his bike. Godspeed Jim.
